Can’t Stand the Meals During College?

If you can’t stand the meals at college, then start a restaurant in your dorm room [NY Times]. That’s what Bryon Zupon, a college senior, did. He was brought up delicious foods that his Japanese mother would make for him when he was growing up. Missing this in college, and seeing only fast food places around campus, he started off as a restaurant reviewer for the college paper. Later, he joined the molecular-gastronomy team. (Didn’t even know there was such a thing in any colleges?)
Then, just before his junior year, he set up a small kitchen in his dorm room with money his parents lent him. The rest is history, involving multi-course dinners he tried out on school friends first.
Tell me this bright kid isn’t going to be a great chef somewhere, someday.
Should You Throw Out That Frozen Ground Beef?
The USDA has just issued a recall off Topps Meat Company’s frozen ground beef products due to potential contamination by E. coli bacteria, which can be deadly. The recall, which involves 21.7M pounds of meat, is the 5th largest. The retail stores involved in this recall are Pathmark and Wal-Mart.
E. coli causes diarrhea and dehydration in most people, but to children, the elderly or those with weak immune systems, these effects can kill. Even if you use fresh ground beef from other sources, it’s important to fully cook the meat to prevent such illness.
